Head of Financial Markets and Institutions at CEPS
Diego Valiante, Ph.D. is Head of Capital Markets Research at the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) and the European Capital Markets Institute (ECMI). He is also Member of the Group of Economic Advisers (GEA) to the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA). Current research activities focus on trading of financial instruments (MiFID and EMIR), financial markets structure and institutional aspects of the Eurozone crisis and central banking. He advises EU institutions, such as the European Commission and the European Parliament (e.g. financial regulation and central banking). Diego has also assisted the Qatar Central Bank to restructure the country's financial framework and to align regulations with IOSCO principles. Finally, he is currently coordinating a consortium in charge of delivering support to ESMA in the data collection and the drafting of the cost-benefit analysis of MiFID II/MiFIR level 2 rules. As a result of his interdisciplinary academic and market background, Diego has published on economics and regulation of financial markets, banking and EU institutions for academic research, specialized policy portals (such as LaVoce and Economonitor) and newspapers. He regularly advises EU institutions and participates to international working groups. His publications have been so far downloaded +55,000 times. In 2011, Diego was included by the Financial News (Dow Jones) in the list of the “Top 40 Rising Stars in Trading and Technology” under the age of 40 in the EMEA. Diego holds a BSc in Business Economics and a MSc in Law and Economics from LUISS University in Rome, both ‘summa cum laude’. He also earned a joint LL.M. Master in Law and Economics (EMLE) from Hamburg and Bologna University, and in 2010 a Ph.D. in Law and Economics from LUISS University.
